Shoulder Pain

  • The shoulder is a complex joint made up of the humerus (upper arm bone), scapula (shoulder blade), and clavicle (collarbone). The rotator cuff muscles (supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis) provide stability and allow for a wide range of motion. Ligaments and tendons further support the joint, while the glenohumeral joint enables mobility.

  • Shoulder pain often results from rotator cuff injuries, tendonitis, bursitis, impingement syndrome, or arthritis. Poor posture, repetitive overhead activities, heavy lifting, and trauma can also contribute.

      • Rest the shoulder and avoid activities that cause pain.

      • Apply ice to reduce swelling and pain.

      • Maintain good posture to reduce strain on the shoulder.

      • Avoid strenuous positions on the shoulder to help reduce inflammation

  • A comprehensive evaluation is crucial to determine the root cause of shoulder pain. Treatment may include manual therapy, soft tissue mobilization, strengthening exercises, and postural corrections to relieve discomfort and restore full range of motion. Specific exercise programs can prevent future injuries and promote long-term recovery.

A Message From Dr. Ross Price, Owner & Founder of Rejuvenate Physical Therapy…

When it comes to shoulder pain, we often hear patients ask:

“Why is this happening to me?”

“Why hasn’t my shoulder pain gone away after months or even years?”

Are you having to take pain medicine before you begin a workout? Are you taking pain medicine when you are not working out for your shoulder pain?

Many people think their shoulder pain will resolve on its own, but over time, it often worsens. At Rejuvenate Physical Therapy, we frequently see people who’ve tried rest and painkillers prescribed by their doctor, only to return when the pain persists or gets worse.

Does that sound like your experience?

Shoulder pain can be incredibly confusing. Maybe you’ve been told it’s part of aging or that it’ll improve with time. But living with ongoing discomfort doesn’t have to be your reality.

Why Shoulder Pain Might Be Lasting Longer Than It Should:

  • You thought it would heal by itself—but it didn’t.

  • You were advised to take painkillers, but once the medication wore off, the pain returned.

  • A friend or family member told you that shoulder pain is inevitable as you age, so you’ve come to accept it.

  • You’ve tried seeking help from other health professionals, but nothing seemed to provide lasting relief.

  • You’ve tried home remedies like heating pads, but they didn’t make a lasting difference.

  • You tried resting, but the pain still lingers day after day.

  • You sought relief from massages, but while they felt good, they didn’t solve the underlying problem.

If any of these sound familiar, we’re here to help you understand why the pain persists and what can be done to address it. Let’s get to the root of the issue together—click the link below to schedule a call and start on the path to recovery.

What Can You Do to Relieve Shoulder Pain?

  1. Make the decision to seek help: Waiting and hoping the pain will disappear only prolongs the discomfort. Many patients we see wish they’d sought treatment sooner.

  2. Engage in the right exercises: Targeted exercises prescribed by a physical therapist can reduce pain, increase shoulder mobility, and prevent the problem from returning.

  3. Avoid poor posture and repetitive strain: Awkward postures or repetitive movements are common contributors to shoulder pain. Strengthening and posture-focused exercises, combined with manual therapy, can bring lasting relief.

  4. Get hands-on physical therapy: Physical therapy is one of the most effective ways to address shoulder pain. At Rejuvenate Physical Therapy, we specialize in treating shoulder pain caused by a wide range of issues, from rotator cuff injuries to tendonitis.
