Low Back Pain

The lumbar spine, located in the lower back, consists of five vertebrae (L1-L5) that support much of the upper body's weight. The vertebrae are cushioned by intervertebral discs and stabilized by surrounding muscles, ligaments, and tendons. Key muscles include the erector spinae, multifidus, and core muscles that help maintain posture and movement. An important component of low back pain are the sacroiliac joints. These are formed where the sacrum (tail bone) joins the hip bone. Misalignment or lack of mobility in the SI joints is a common cause for back pain, and if often overlooked by healthcare providers. Low back pain is often caused by issues like disc injuries, muscle strains, and vertebral or structural misalignment. Other causes include nerve issues, spinal stenosis (narrowing of spaces), and osteoarthritis (joint inflammation). These conditions can result from poor posture, repetitive strain, improper lifting or exercising techniques, or trauma.
-
Maintain good posture, use ergonomic furniture, and engage in core-strengthening exercises. Apply heat or ice to alleviate pain, and consider over-the-counter pain relief for short-term relief. Avoid prolonged sitting or standing, and use proper body mechanics when lifting.
-
Focus should be placed on proper evaluation to identify the root cause of the issue. Just because the pain is in the low back, doesn’t mean the issue is with a vertebra or a disc. Once the evaluation is performed strengthening the core and lower back muscles, improving flexibility, and promoting proper body mechanics will help prevent recurrence of the issue. Other treatment should include manual therapy, massage therapy, and tailored exercise programs.

A Message From Dr. Ross Price, Owner & Founder of Rejuvenate Physical Therapy…
It's very common to dismiss back pain, thinking it’s nothing serious and will just go away on its own. Many people attribute it to “sleeping wrong” or assume it’s just a “spasm” or something that “everyone” deals with at some point…
There’s no clear reason why it started, but it doesn’t seem to be getting better!
If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone—we hear this all the time. In fact, lower back pain and sciatica are the most common issues we treat in our clinic!
And when it comes to living with back pain, almost everyone asks us...
“Why is This Happening to Me? Why Am I Still Suffering With Back Pain After Putting Up With It For 3-6 Months?” (Sometimes More!)
Here are 4 things you can do:
Make the decision to get help… from a professional: Many people delay, hoping their back pain will "go away with time." But months later, they're still dealing with it—or it’s gotten worse. Don’t wait too long to take action.
Do the RIGHT exercises: The right exercises, prescribed by a physical therapist, can significantly reduce your pain and help you move freely again. These specific, progressive exercises not only relieve discomfort but also prevent future flare-ups, unlike some generic exercises that might make things worse.
Avoid prolonged sitting and rest: If you've ever struggled to stand up after sitting for a long time, you know how back pain can tighten everything up. Resting too much and sitting in awkward positions can make your pain worse. The solution is a combination of strengthening exercises to improve posture and hands-on treatment to keep you moving and feeling better.
Get hands-on Physical Therapy: Physical therapy has been proven to help people with low back pain. At Rejuvenate Physical Therapy, it’s one of the most common conditions we treat. Whether your pain is affecting your work, daily activities, or quality time with loved ones, physical therapy can help you get back to living your life as quickly as possible.
If you're interested in learning how Rejuvenate Physical Therapy can help you live with less back pain, we invite you to book a free, no-obligation appointment at one of our clinics.
You thought the pain would go away on its own – but it didn’t.
You visited the doctor, who recommended rest and painkillers – but the meds didn’t help, and once they wore off, the back pain came right back.
A family member or friend told you that back pain is just part of getting older, so you accepted it.
You’ve seen other healthcare professionals or a physical therapist before, but nothing seemed to make a difference.
You tried exercises from YouTube, but they either didn’t help or made your back pain worse.
You thought resting would help because your back hurt so much, but instead, it only made it feel more stiff and tight.
You got a few massages hoping they’d relieve the pain, but while they felt good, they didn’t solve the problem long-term.
If any of these sound familiar, we’d love to help you! You can schedule a free call with our low back specialist to discuss what can be done. The fact that you’ve already tried these things is actually a GOOD sign – it means you’re closer to finding the solution that works!

Why does back pain last longer than it should? It’s easy to get confused when you’ve heard so many different explanations from various sources. Plenty of people are quick to offer advice, but much of it isn’t reliable.
You might believe your back pain started from something specific, like lifting or sleeping in an awkward position, but often it’s the result of years of poor posture and movement patterns. These habits weaken your lower back muscles, and the lifting or awkward sleep position is just a trigger, not the true cause.
Without the right guidance, back pain can be confusing. As a result, many people accept it as a ‘normal’ part of life, believing it’s something they just have to live with.
Another scenario we see all the time in our clinic is when people go to the Doctor, and the Doctor tells them to rest and “try these painkillers” and “see how it goes”.
However, this is rarely ever the best advice and often 4 weeks later they end up going back to the doctor again because it hasn’t got any better. What’s even worse, they’re often given yet another prescription of even stronger pills, and advised MORE rest. This is ridiculous and explains why so many people in the U.S. are suffering with chronic lower back pain.
Most people think that when they get Back Pain it will just go away on its own.
They think that they’ll wake up one morning and like “magic”, it’ll be as if back pain never happened… But then 6 months later you’re still living with back pain – often even worse than it was when it first started. The good news is that chronic back pain relief without surgery is possible!
